JENNY GRAND: Jenny is a fifteen-year-old, grungy body-boarder. She is still in love with her ex-boyfriend Han who moved away from Hayle several years previously. Jenny lives with her parents in a beachside chalet called Sunny Daze and her aims in life are to learn to surf, get a dog, get with Han and avoid the annoying models strutting around her town.
HAN SMITH: Han is a seventeen-year-old quiet surfer dude with faded green dye in his blond hair. He is good-looking, but has truly terrible dress sense. Han begins to act suspiciously after the Britain's Next Catwalk Queen television show arrives in Hayle. Han dislikes Jenny’s best friend Nathan, but tolerates him for Jenny's sake.
VEGA: Jenny’s nemesis. Vega is one of the modelling contestants in Britain’s Next Catwalk Queen. Sporting a Cleopatra hairstyle and a posh accent, she is almost universally liked, with the exception of Jenny who loathes her. Han appears to be interested in Vega, and Vega in him.
NATHAN O'SHAUGHNESSY: Jenny's childhood friend and next door neighbour. Nathan is fourteen years old, wears NHS glasses, and lives in the chalet Demelza Grey. He spends his days chasing girls, chilling out with Jenny and avoiding his little brother Sammy. Nathan once kissed Jenny beneath a bus stop but it was a really bad kiss.
MR HITCHCOCK: Mr Hitchcock is a polite old duffer. He helps Jenny with her crazy golf and allows Jenny to walk his dog Lizzie. He is bald, short and seriously unfit. He enjoys reading his newspaper, beating local teenagers at pub darts and growing vegetables at his allotment. Jenny’s parents and Han do not understand Jenny’s friendship with Mr Hitchcock, mostly because Jenny is fifteen and Mr Hitchcock is sixty-seven.
LUKE GILBERT: Known as Loopy Luke, Luke Gilbert is a local crackpot and roamer. Jenny quite likes Luke Gilbert, but starts to avoid him when she hears of the terrible scandal that lurks in his family history.
LIZZIE THE DOG: Lizzie is a pregnant border collie. She enjoys running in the sand dunes, swimming in the sea and retrieving dead blackbirds. She dislikes baths and adders.
